Struma river

The wide and green valley is framed by the Pirin mountains in the east, with snow clad peaks reaching 2,914 metres (Vikhren). In the west, the Maleshevska mountains mark the boarder to Macedonia with mountains reaching 1,406 metres (Klepalo). From the high mountains several smaller valleys wind their way into the main valley, and many mountain streams empty their water into the Struma river.

From the bottom of the valley (100–200 metres above sea level), the land rises gradually, with several plateaus, up to the mountain peaks. There are almost no precipices, and great areas are grown with trees. There are several national parks and protected areas in the province.
